No matter how tough the economy might be, there's one time of year you can always count on to find work - the holiday season. With the current market being very much in favor of job seekers, the holiday season is full of seasonal employment opportunities. Find out which companies are hiring and why seasonal work could be right for you.
The Benefits of Seasonal Work
Before you decide you don't want to bother with a seasonal job, there are a few things you should know. Seasonal work comes with many benefits, including the following:
Save Money for the Holidays
People tend to spend quite a bit of money during the holiday season. If you're looking for a way to afford a few more Christmas presents this year, you can work a seasonal job. After a few months, you may even be able to use the extra money to pay off some debts.
Don't underestimate the strain of holiday debt. If you're tired of balancing your checkbook every holiday season, try working a seasonal job. You may even get discounts from your favorite retailer.
Get Your Resume Back On Track
If you spent a few months out of work, you could find it difficult to get a job or interview offer. Most employers don't like to see large resume gaps, regardless of your reasons for having them. If you want to improve your chances of finding work, you need to fill in your resume with a job.
A seasonal job is ideal for a filler on your resume. Because the position is intended to be temporary, you don't need to worry about explaining why you only worked for two months. But you still have something to put on your resume, and this can buy your time until you find the ideal permanent job.
Learn New Skills
One of the other advantages of seasonal work is learning new skills. If you have a weakness or know you want to get into an industry and are underqualified, you can find a seasonal opportunity. There could be a temporary position that teaches you the skills you need to get a new job.
Even if you don't have a specific new job in mind, a seasonal position can expose you to something you love. For instance, you might never have worked in sales before. Working in a sales position could help you discover a new career.
Get a Permanent Job Offer
People often fail to realize that seasonal jobs often result in permanent offers. If you excel at your job, the manager could choose to offer you a permanent position.
Typically, companies are willing to hire one or two of their seasonal workers on a full time and permanent basis. This isn't always the case, but does happen frequently. You should go into your seasonal job knowing that there could be a better offer waiting for you at the end. If you work hard enough and do your job well, you could have a permanent position at the end of the holidays.
