If you love nature and doing your part for the environment, you might be interested in becoming a park ranger. The job is rewarding and allows you to trade in the cubicle for nature. Before you embark on this new and exciting career, find out what you need to do to become a park ranger.
Understand the Role
First, you need to understand the role and duties of a park ranger. A ranger protects, cares for, and promotes land conservation in the US. The role varies based on your location and organization. For instance, you could take on any of the following positions:
Law enforcement
Forestry services
Wildlife management
Administration work
Public education
Maintenance and repairs
As a law enforcement park ranger, you could be responsible for patrolling the area and performing rescues. You may also be responsible for giving out citations to law-breakers. If you’re in public education, you could give presentations and tours to visitors of your facility.
Some park rangers work in nature museums or lead nature hikes.
On the administrative side, a park ranger might be responsible for making reports, recording vehicle usage, and maintaining visitor logs. The rangers in maintenance usually maintain trails and toads, identify sensitive areas, and clean up after visitors.
Where They Usually Work
Park rangers can work for national parks, state parks, and county parks. However, that’s not all. There are many organizations that hire park rangers, like organizations behind historic sites or recreation areas.
Because there are so many different places you can work, the job duties vary greatly. You can be completely isolated from the rest of the world, or interact with large groups of people daily.
How Much They Make
If you want to become a park ranger to be rich, you should rethink your strategy. The pay range for this career is between $26,696 and $69,590. When you first start out, you’re likely to be in the lower ranger.
The pay depends on your education, your job title, and your location. Some organizations pay much higher than others.
Steps to Becoming a Park Ranger
As with most careers, the park ranger career doesn’t have one single career path. In fact, there are several different ways in which you can obtain a job offer. Although many park ranger jobs favor applicants with bachelor’s or graduate degrees, there are entry-level roles that only require a diploma or GED.
Meet the Requirements
The first step to becoming a ranger is to make sure you meet all the requirements for the job. As mentioned, you need at least a high school diploma or GED. But most National Park Service jobs require a bachelor’s degree or experience at a GS-4 level job.
If you don’t have experience or an advanced degree, you should look into becoming a park ranger with a less strict organization. Other organizations don’t usually require more than an associate’s degree, and even then, you may be able to substitute experience for a degree.
Typically, you need a clean background to become a park ranger. You also may need to pass a medical and psychological exam. Additionally, you need a clean drug screen. If you use medical marijuana and are applying for a federal job, you may not qualify. Most park ranger jobs require you to be a US citizen or lawful resident, have a driver’s license, and be 18 or older.
Volunteer to Gain Experience
If you’re not in a rush to start your career, you could work on gaining experience through volunteer opportunities. You can go to your local state park and ask about volunteering or gain experience through a wildlife rehabilitator or trail organization.
Once again, the type of experience you need depends on the kind of park ranger job you want. If trail maintenance is your goal, volunteer to clean up the local trails. And if you want to be on the administrative side, volunteer with a non-profit and do their admin work.
Work on Your Resume and Cover Letter
Next, it’s time to fine-tune your resume. Tailor it to the job title, and find a way to relate all your past experience to your desired role. Usually, you can find a way to connect the dots. If you don’t have any relevant jobs, focus on your soft skills or volunteer opportunities.
Ask a friend to look over your resume. If they make any suggestions, listen and use them to improve your resume. If you have a strong resume, you’ll catch the hiring manager’s attention.Your cover letter also matters. Write a cover letter tailored to a park ranger job, and show your passion. Every time you apply for a new job, edit the cover letter to show that you read the job listing.
Know Where to Look
You can use your favorite job search engine to find park ranger jobs. However, there are limited roles in the industry. You may need to be willing to relocate, or at least broaden your search radius. States like Montana, Alaska, South Dakota, Mississippi, and North Dakota have the most park ranger jobs.
Meanwhile, some cities like Fort Collins, CO and Missoula, MT also have many opportunities for rangers. If you can’t find anything local to you, consider relocating to one of the states or cities with more park ranger jobs.
Interview Well
When you show up for an interview, be professional. Even though the job is outdoors, dress your best. The interviewer wants to know that you’ll take the job seriously and that you can represent their organization well.
And it’s not just about dressing professionally. You should also speak professionally and highlight your passion for the role. Interviewers don't take hiring lightly because most park ranger jobs require extensive on-the-job training. They want to know that their new hire will stick with the position for years. Make it clear that this is your chosen career path and not just a short-term job.
If you follow all of these tips, you could end up working as a park ranger. It’s time to get your boots on and get to work.
