In the past, graduating from college came with the major challenge of finding a job. No one wanted to hire a graduate with no hands-on experience. However, things are different now. Due to the high demand for workers, employers are overlooking experience and are much more likely to hire recent college graduates. Learn more about what that means for you.
What are the Current Conditions?
To have an understanding of why the market is so favorable for recent graduates, you need to consider the current state or labor. The pandemic drastically altered the labor market. It went from one extreme to another. First, there weren't enough jobs for people. Now, there are too many jobs and bit enough qualified applicants.
As a result of the labor shortages that are happening across the board, employers eliminated some of their requirements. Positions that once demanded years of experience now require no or limited experience. For graduates, this is great news. The common struggle of being unemployed due to a lack of experience is no longer there. Even the educational requirements are different. In some situations, jobs that once required post-graduate degrees no longer demand them.
To put it simply, the job market is in your favor. If you just graduated and don't have experience or an advanced degree, you can take your pick of jobs. As long as you know where to look for work, you don't need to worry about spending months unemployed and struggling.
Better Salary
There's also the issue of a higher salary. Because it's harder to find workers, companies are offering sign-on bonuses and higher wages. While an entry-level position may have only paid $28,000 a year, it now might pay $35,000 a year. In almost every industry, salaries increased.
This is a huge advantage for college graduates, especially considering that they can have $30,000 and more in debt after graduating. Some jobs are even offering student loan repayment. If you find the right job, you can wipe out your debt or pay it off quickly.
Having a degree can pay off now more than ever. Currently, college grads make over 50% more than people with high school diplomas. But you need to make sure you don't undervalue yourself. It's not uncommon for college graduates to undervalue themselves by about $10,000. Before you accept a job offer, look at the median salary and make sure you're receiving enough money.
Getting What You Want
Thanks to market conditions, you may be able to get what you want from your first job. But what exactly do college graduates want? According to the latest research, college graduates want more learning opportunities. They also want to see that companies are inclusive and have good benefits.
In one survey, first-time hires explained that they made their first priority to have a job with minimal stress. They don't want to work long hours or take their work home every day. For many individuals, the job hunt is about finding something that will leave them without excess pressure and stress.
Remote Jobs
There's also a major push for remote opportunities. After Covid, people realized the value in being able to work from home. College graduates are no exception, and they stand to benefit in many ways.
For one, remote jobs allow grads to save on their transportation expenses. There's no commute, so there's no money spent on gas or vehicle maintenance. Even more savings come in the form of fewer coffees and lunches. When you work from home, you can save hundreds of dollars a month.
Another benefit of working from home is the convenience and flexibility. While some jobs allow more flexibility than others, most remote jobs offer much more flexibility than working in an office. Because remote jobs are more desirable, there is added competition for them. If you only want a remote job, it might be more difficult for you to find one.
How to Get a Job in the Current Market
Although the market is red hot, you still need to work hard to find a job. You need to know where to look for work, how to apply, and how to interview well. Before you start the job search, take some time to familiarize yourself with a few tips.
First, know your target job. What's your career path, and what job would be the best springboard for your career. If you're not sure what you want to do with your life, take a few days to think about it. You need a plan before you start looking for jobs.
Once you know what jobs you want, you can start your search. There are multiple job platforms, but most of them require you to search in the same way. Use the right keywords to find ideal jobs.
Applying for the Jobs
When you find a job listing that appeals to you, take the time to read the listing. Look for important keywords and make a note of the requirements. Then, take a look at your resume. How does the listing fit with your resume? You should change your resume to highlight the skills and requirements needed for the job.
Additionally, your resume should be up-to-date. You can add volunteer opportunities, internships, and large projects to make your resume more appealing. When a hiring manager reads your resume, they should be able to immediately see that you're a qualified applicant.
Making an Impression
If you do well writing your resume, you'll receive several emails or phone calls about interviewing for positions. You should be ready to make the right impression on the hiring manager. To accomplish this, you need to prepare for the interview.
Long before your interview, research the company. Take notes and use those notes to impress the hiring manager. If possible, ask a friend to help you prepare for the interview by asking you common questions. Ask for feedback and alter your responses if necessary. On the day of your interview, you're more likely to be confident and prepared.
