At some point in your life, you're bound to ask yourself what path you need to take for a brighter future. And although this is a common question, the timing could happen at any point in time. The question might cross your mind before you go to college or years after starting a dead-end career. Whatever the case may be, you need to take some time to think about what's best for you. By following these tips, you can have an easier time planning out your future.
Think About Your Past
Looking at your past is a great way to plan for the future. Before you can move forward, you need to evaluate your prior choices and reflect on your life experiences. How did you get to where you are now?
As you think about your history, make note of the things you were good at. You can use those things to help you find a new career. Here are a few other details to consider:
What was your favorite job?
Are there any events that shaped your life?
What was your least favorite job?
Which classes and activities do you enjoy the most?
Do you have any passions?
Can you think of any careers you may have overlooked?
Did You Fulfill Your Dreams?
After you reflect on your past, you can begin to think about your life dreams and goals. Sometimes, events or circumstances keep you from following your dreams. You might not even realize that you were derailed from what you truly wanted to do. If you haven't achieved your dreams, it could be time to get back on track.
Think back to your childhood. Did you have any childhood dreams? People often forget about their dreams from their youth, but they could point you in the right direction. Try to remember why you had the dream and consider whether or not you can pursue the career.
While most people hesitate to change their careers, it's never too late to do just that. If you want to be happy, you may need to switch to a new field. Oftentimes, adults let fear stop them from pursuing their desires. You might worry about failing or distrust your abilities. By writing down your fears, you can address them and find out if your dream job is realistic.
Know What You Enjoy
Your full-time job takes up the majority of your time. If you don't do something you enjoy, there's no way to find happiness. A few free hours after work and on weekends aren't enough to satisfy your desires. So, as you try to determine what to do with your life, think about what you enjoy doing.
In addition to thinking about your passions, consider what you're good at doing. There should be an overlap. If you can find something that you're passionate about and you're good at, you can set yourself up for a happy future.
Of course, figuring this out is harder than it seems. You need to spend an hour thinking about your natural talents. Then, try to figure out what tasks you enjoy doing and why you like them. As you think about your favorite tasks, make notes. What skills do you have that help you succeed at these tasks? If you can't think of anything, ask your friends and family members for help. They may make you aware of a few talents you didn't know you had.
What Motivates You?
It's helpful to enjoy your work, but you also need to be motivated to perform. As you evaluate your life, think about what motivates you. Do you work well when you’re under close supervision? If so, you should avoid a job that requires you to work from home. You might also prefer working in groups, which means you shouldn’t have a career that keeps you isolated from others.
When you think about how you’re motivated, look at specific examples from your past. When you were successful or made major achievements, what was your driving force? For some people, having a great work-life balance pushes them to succeed. Others need financial motivation, like a commission or performance bonus. Figure out what motivates you and look for a job or career that will give you the right push to succeed.
Think of Your Life Goals
Now, it’s time to look ahead to your future. What are your life goals? Make a list of all your goals, such as owning a home, receiving an award, or retiring at a certain age. Once you have a long list, categorize them by time frame. You should have short-term, medium, and long-term goals.
While looking at your list of goals, think about how your current career fits in with your goals. In some cases, your career may not allow you to reach most of your goals. That’s a sign that it’s time for a change. What career would allow you to reach your goals? After brainstorming, you could come up with a few job titles that tell you exactly what to do with your life.
If you don’t already have goals, then make some. First, think about what specific things you want to accomplish and why. Then, consider how you can make your accomplishment measurable. When will you know you achieved your goal? Whatever the goal is, it should be achievable and relevant to your needs. Finally, you should come up with a way to set deadlines to assess your success.
Trust Yourself
Self-doubt could keep you from finding a better path. If you don’t trust in yourself, you won’t make any changes in your life. The most important thing you can do is believe in yourself and take steps forward. Even if you don’t want to make major changes in your life, you can take small steps in another direction. You might decide to take an online certification or apply for one new job each week. As long as you’re making progress, you’re doing well.
