When you’re looking for work, you have a tough decision to make. Should you only apply for long-term jobs, or is it worth looking into temp agencies? Before you make that critical decision, you should learn everything you need to know about working with temp agencies. Continue reading and find out whether or not you should work with a temp agency.
What is a Temp Agency?
A temp agency is a company that offers short-term jobs to people searching for work. Some individuals also refer to temp agencies as staffing agencies. They allow you to work for a short, very specific period of time. However, some temporary positions turn into long-term careers.
It’s a common misconception that a job offered by a temp agency is a dead-end job. Contrary to popular belief, temp agency jobs often result in further opportunities. The jobs exist in most industries, so you may be able to get your foot in the door of an industry you have no experience with. Temp agencies offer opportunities to people of all skill levels and often get you started right away.
For these reasons, temp agencies can be a great opportunity for job-seekers. But is a temp agency right for you? It may or may not be. The answer depends on your goals, your current situation, and other factors.
Why Are There Temp Agencies?
To understand what temp agencies are, you need to know why they’re around in the first place. Temp agencies are needed because some jobs are only seasonal, or they revolve around a short-term project. So, a company might need nurses to handle a vaccine rollout or web developers to handle a new project. However, there may be no need for full-time workers after a few months.
Temp agencies help companies fill these vacancies. They spend all of their time finding employees for temporary jobs, and that frees up the companies to work on their projects. If it weren’t for temp agencies, the companies would need to spend too much time marketing for short-term positions.
Today, companies are struggling to find workers. Whether the positions are short-term or long-term, they are empty. To fill those vacancies, employers turn to temp agencies. This means that there are more jobs available with temp agencies and that there are more long-term opportunities available through temp agencies.
How it Works
You might be wondering how you can get started with a temp agency. First, you need to sign up with an agency. This is similar to the process of applying for a specific job. You need to fill out an application and go to an interview. After your interview, the agency finds you an appropriate job. They try to pick something that plays on your experience and strengths.
Once you get offered a job, you may need to sign a contract or work agreement. In the agreement, there should be details about your pay, rate, and more. You need to read the fine print to find out if you’re allowed to work with other temp agencies or to work other jobs.
Some agencies charge a placement fee. However, this may be a red flag. You should try to work with an agency that charges the employers and not the soon-to-be employees. Before you agree to work with a temp agency, find out more about their policies and fees. Look up their reputation and only work with a company that has good reviews.
Benefits of Temp Work
If you want to know whether or not temp work is right for you, there are a few things you should know. Here are some benefits of taking a job from a temp agency:
Build Your Resume
If you work a temporary job, you have every right to add it to your resume. This can help you add skills to your resume and cover any odd gaps that an employer might notice.
Flexibility
In some temp positions, you have a certain degree of flexibility. You might only need to work for two months and then take a break to tend to your business. This is better than needing to quit a full-time position because you don’t need to explain why your employment ended.
Find a New Passion
It’s impossible to know what you love if you had the same job for 20 years. When you work with a temp agency, you can explore new career paths or different industries. You might discover a passion for something you knew nothing about.
No Politics
In a full-time position, you need to deal with everyday politics. To move forward in a position, you might feel obligated to talk to the right people and act a certain way. But, because temp jobs are short-term, you have no pressure to do so.
Tips for Going Permanent
Although not all temp positions become permanent, there is a chance that you can use your temporary job to get a long-term position. If you’re hoping to use a temp agency to obtain a better job, here are a few tips:
Show You’re Reliable
Use your time with the company to show that they can depend on you. Show up on time every day and be willing to help out whenever they need you. If you’re not sure how to help, ask someone. You’ll pick up new skills along the way.
Communicate
Don’t let yourself fade into the background. Instead, communicate regularly with everyone. Talk to your representative and make sure they know your goals. And, once you have a job, communicate with your supervisor. Let them know that you’re interested in a permanent position. After your time is up, they may choose to keep you on.
Be Positive
People often underestimate the power of a positive attitude. If you show up to work every day with a smile on your face, you have a greater chance of succeeding. If you can bring joy to everyone else, you could get a long-term position. At the very least, you will have a glowing recommendation.
